Thanks to a not-so-new technology called a “CNC Mill” and the idea of open source sharing, Opendesk has made the idea of custom manufacturing furniture an affordable reality. The concept is simple: pre-made digital designs exist on Opendesk’s website where users can opt to order or customize (if you have the design savvy). The files are sent to a local manufacturer where heavy birch ply pieces are custom cut, flat-packed, and shipped to your door. Pretty cool.

However, shopping the interwebs for home decor is an easy alternative to hitting up crowded stores. And with so many amazing sources for stylish and affordable goods at your fingertips, it’s almost scary how fast you could decorate your entire home.

How could you sit on a sofa from a brand named Joybird and not be happy? Another reason to smile is the company’s upstanding sustainable practices—they plant a comparable amount of trees with every furniture purchase made of what it took to construct the piece (i.e., the sale of a chair equals three trees, a credenza, on the other hand gets eight trees). If you’re willing to wait 6-8 weeks, you get your pick of dozens of fabric colors for your new sofa, but a handful of styles are available quick ship in a standard gray.
